The Verkhovna Rada has rejected draft law No. 9439, which effectively allowed the President’s Office to appoint politically convenient judges

The draft law proposed that during martial law and for one year after, the President could manually override the recommendations of the High Council of Justice (HCJ) for judicial appointments if there was “compromising information” from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) or the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) about the candidate. Neither the President’s Office, the SBU, nor the NABU would be required to publicly disclose the compromising information or its sources. More details can be found here.

Previously, the Anti-Corruption Committee of the Verkhovna Rada declared draft law No. 9439 as non-compliant with anti-corruption legislation.
