The Ethics Council recommends candidates for the High Council of Justice amid concerns

Today, on June 19th, the competition for one of the vacant positions in the High Council of Justice concluded. The Ethics Council announced the list of candidates recommended for appointment under the President’s quota. The selected candidates are Andriy Zhuk, a judge of the Administrative Court of Cassation within the Supreme Court, and Dmytro Davydchuk, a senior detective at NABU. Integrity reservations arose concerning both candidates, as detailed in our previous reports.

In particular, the Ethics Council scrutinized the origin of the property owned by Davydchuk’s wife. Meanwhile, judge Zhuk is known for acquitting the “Maidan judge” Vladyslava Hudym, who had detained a participant of the Revolution of Dignity.

The final decision now lies with the President. Furthermore, that the President has not yet appointed a member to the High Council of Justice from the previously recommended list for over a year. We hope that a decision will be made soon. Currently, 17 out of the 21 positions in the High Council of Justice are filled, leaving 4 vacancies.
