Under the new rules: the Verkhovna Rada appointed Serhiy Riznyk as a judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine

On May 23, the Verkhovna Rada appointed Serhiy Riznyk to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. He is the first judge selected under the new rules, which include participation of the Advisory Group of Experts (AGE) with international members.

Serhiy Riznyk is a professor in the Department of Constitutional Law and vice-rector at Ivan Franko University of Lviv. His candidacy faced no significant objections from the public, and he satisfactorily addressed the AGE’s concerns during his interview.

This appointment highlights the transparent and diligent process of the new selection procedure for the CCU, meeting one of the key requirements for Ukraine’s European integration. This achievement is the result of years of dedicated work by us and our partners from the Anti-Corruption Action Centre and Automaidan.

However, the effectiveness of the new appointment procedure will ultimately be assessed based on the judges’ voting.

We will continue to monitor the competition for the remaining four vacancies. Notably, a new competition for the CCU under the Verkhovna Rada’s quota has been announced. We encourage all qualified and reputable candidates to apply and help improve the CCU’s reputation. Riznyk’s appointment demonstrates that even minor issues can be addressed and resolved, ensuring confidence in the selection process.
